If you don’t visit Cerro Castillo National Park, your journey through Patagonia will not be complete. Its landscapes, mountains and the trek to the lake of the same name are absolutely  unbelievable!

The trek to the Laguna Cerro Castillo can be demanding, but we assure you that every 13 kilometers roundtrip will be worth it. It’s approximately a 7 hour-trek in total, where you will see native forests of Lenga, Ñirres, Box-leaved barberry, Chauras and Chilean guava berry.

How do I go to Cerro Castillo in winter?

Unlike the rest of the year, visits are managed by email contacto@corporacioncerrocastillo.cl, because in winter, the paths are closed for self-guiding and you can only enter under previous evaluation and authorization.

You must enter with a certified mountain guide, and you must submit your application at least five days in advance for recreational activities and high-altitude sports.

Hikes with snowshoes through Patagonia National Park

Located between the districts of Chile Chico and Cochrane, you will find Patagonia National Park, where you can do intense, but recomforting hikes with snowshoes.

Feel the crunch of the snow under your feet while you discover secrets hidden in every corner!

What routes can I take in winter inside the Patagonia National Park?

One of the most famous routes, which you have to take with guides and tourist services registered with Sernatur,  is the Ruta del Huemul. It has 26 kilometers long.

Normally, the Municipality of Lord Cochrane, carries out guided expeditions on this route during winter and summer to encourage respect and care for the Huemul, the Andean deer and Chilean national emblem.

You can also walk around some areas of Patagonia National Park without problems between May and August, for example, places like Chacabuco, Cueva de las Manos, Jeinimeni and Tamango. Get your entry ticket in advance here.

Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine is a favorite destination for nature lovers. It is also a must for trekking aficionados with some of the best circuits, prized by amateurs and experts from all over the world. And for many photographers it is home to the most scenic landscapes on the planet.

Visit Chilean Patagonia and fall in love with Torres del Paine!

How do I get to Torres del Paine?

The best way to get to Torres del Paine is by plane. You can take a 3-hour and 17- minute flight from Santiago to the Julio Gallardo Airport in Puerto Natales in the Magallanes region.

You can also arrive at Presidente Carlos Ibañez del Campo Airport in Punta Arenas, and then travel by vehicle until you reach Natales.

You will find buses, transfers, and taxis in Natales that will take you to Torres del Paine. It takes the bus almost two hours to reach Laguna Amarga, and it also stops at Pudeto, Pehoé Camping, Administración, and Lago Grey Hotel.

Recommendations for travelling to Patagonia in winter

The beauty of the landscapes of the Chilean Patagonia in winter invites you to travel but always bear in mind these recommendations to make your visit safer.

  • Check the state of the roads before leaving. In some places, the roads are closed because of accumulated snow.
  • Use snow chains and have your tires in good condition if you are traveling by car.
  • Use thermal and waterproof clothing. The climate is cold and changes fast.
  • Ask if the tourist services are working because some cabins and tours close in winter. Remember to always choose those registered with Sernatur.

It’s not Tibet: The most energetic place is located in Chile

No comments yet

About 60 kilometers from La Serena, the Elqui Valley is located, a Chilean place known by many as the “new Tibet” in which year after year, it surprises travelers that are looking for a reconnection with themselves amid one of the clearest and starry skies in the world.

This valley, where Chilean pisco is also born, combines impressive landscapes, ancestral mysticism and an energy that seems to come out from this very land.

It has become a magnet for spiritual seekers, astronomers and curious travelers from all over the world. We invite you to know why!

Kundalini energy and its arrival in Chile

Have you heard of kundalini energy? This is a belief from the spiritual traditions of India, focused on the vital and spiritual strength.

According to these beliefs, kundalini energy is also present on Earth and every 13,000 years, it changes its location. For a long period of human history, this energy was located in Tibet, southwest China, but now, it has moved to Elqui Valley, to one of the most well-known towns, Cochiguaz.

This phenomenon has promoted spiritual tourism in this valley of the Coquimbo region, attracting visitors from all over the world that are interested in yoga retreats, meditation and holistic practices.

A portal between hemispheres?

One of the most fascinating myths about the Elqui Valley is that Cochiguaz, located between hills at 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) above sea level is connected with Tibet.

According to local myths, both places are located at the geographic antipodes, meaning that they are at extreme opposites points on the Earth.

This alignment has given cause to legends about energetic portals and the mysterious disappearance of Buddhist monks that, according to the locals, were secluded on the Cancana hill and never returned.

The stupa of enlightenment

Source: @Estupa_iluminación

If you liked this story, you should go visit the Stupa of enlightenment, a Buddhist monument in Cochiguaz. It is the biggest in Chile and a true symbol of spirituality and serenity. You can visit this monument from Monday to Sunday (they close on Wednesdays), between 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

To get there, take the route from La Serena to the inside of the Elqui Valley. Once you are in Montegrande, take a turn to Cochiguaz and keep driving until the end of the paved way. You will see the stupa in all its glory!

Apart from its architectural beauty, this location irradiates a special energy. It’s the ideal place to meditate or simply to just contemplate the Andean landscape. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, comfortable clothes and an open mind.

No comments yet

Travel around Chile in 7 days with this amazing itinerary full of activities and unique destinations in our country.

In just one week, we will take you on a tour of its most spectacular landscapes, from the Atacama Desert to the magical snow-capped Andes Mountain Range, without forgetting to enjoy every moment.

So, if you have a week to get lost in a paradise full of nature, culture and adrenaline, here is the perfect itinerary for you! Let’s travel around Chile in 7 days.

Day 1: Welcome to Santiago, the “heart” of central Chile

Barrio Italia

Picture of a store in Italia Neighborhood. Credits: Sernatur.

We start with the capital city, Santiago! After your arrival, take some time to rest and go out and walk through its main neighborhoods.

If you are staying in districts in the eastern part of Santiago like Providencia, Las Condes, Vitacura, or Ñuñoa, you can walk or take the subway to attractions such as the Costanera Center lookout or the San Cristóbal Hill with its funicular. You will have a panoramic view of the capital and a view of the Andes Mountain Range in both!

During the afternoon, we recommend you take a walk through Bellavista Neighborhood, famous for its bars, art, and a nightlife that will surprise you. There you will find La Chascona, one of the house museums of the Chilean poet and Nobel Prize in Literature, Pablo Neruda.

Another alternative is to get to know the Barrio Italia (Italy Neighborhood), which is located a few meters away from the Parque Bustamante or Santa Isabel subway stations. You will find stores, bars, and plenty of entertainment.

Day 2: Get to know the snow a few kilometers away from the capital

One of the advantages of visiting Santiago is that a few kilometers away from our main city, you will have several alternatives to visit the snow. Keep in mind that the season usually takes place between the months of June and September!

At ski resorts like Valle Nevado, Portillo, El Colorado or La Parva, you can enjoy a day full of activities in the snow, whether you like skiing, snowboarding, or just enjoying the view with a nice cup of hot chocolate.

You can find more information about where to get your tickets, prices, and other details here.

Day 3: San Pedro de Atacama and the driest desert in the world

If there is a place in Chile you must visit, it is is San Pedro de Atacama. Located 1,550 kilometers away from the capital, this destination is famous for being situated in the Atacama Desert, which is considered the driest in the world. This contrasts with its flora and fauna diversity, landscapes, salt flats, and even natural hot springs.

Despite its geographical distance, flights from Santiago to Calama, the nearest city to San Pedro, last little more than two hours. You will then have to take a transfer or a private vehicle from the airport, which run frequently. Always prefer official or authorized transport for your safety.

One of the must-sees is the tour to the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), where apart from enjoying from a desert landscape, you will see the best sunset of all San Pedro de Atacama.

The Moon Valley tour can be done in one day and includes visits to the Kari Lookout or the Coyote Stone, where you can appreciate the immensity of the Atacama desert and see the best sunsets, according to tourist guides and locals.

It is important that you wear comfortable clothes, appropriate footwear, bring water and all the necessary elements to prevent sun radiation, like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Remember to only hire tourist services registered with Sernatur!

Check out  other must-do activities here, how to get to San Pedro and everything you should know before your visit.

The Atacama Desert is one of the best places in the world to look at the stars, where you can actually look up and see the Milky Way at first glance. That is why some of the world’s most important observatories have chosen to settle in this area.

You can either camp in the desert and admire the stars all night long, or go on a night hike. These tours depart from San Pedro and take you to a remote place where you can gaze at the sky with a powerful telescope.

You can also visit some observatories, such as ALMA, the world’ s largest observatory that is open to the public.

Day 4: The amazing Tatio Geysers

If you are visiting San Pedro de Atacama, you can’t miss the Tatio Geysers, one of the largest geothermal fields in the world. It is especially fascinating in the early morning hours, when the fumaroles rise towards the cold sky and create a visual effect difficult to describe because of how striking it is.

The excursions to the Tatio Geysers are comforting, but you must take the following considerations into account since you will be at a height over 4,000 meters above sea level.

Remember to eat well the previous night, drink plenty of water, and wrap up warm in layers with thermal clothing, mainly because the temperature is usually below 0°C.

In the afternoon, you can relax in the Puritama thermal waters, for a refreshing bath surrounded by nature and desert scenery.

Day 5: Enjoy southern Chile and its dreamlike landscapes!

During your fifth day of adventure, you will have to go back to Calama to take a new flight bound for southern Chile. Unlike the north, in this area you will find dense forests, glaciers, rivers, and lakes.

An excellent alternative is to land at the Carrier Sur International Airport in Concepción. You can take a transfer or rent a vehicle from there, which you will have to travel in two and a half hours to get to Nevados de Chillán, a ski and snowboard resort which has hotels.

We recommend you spend your first day enjoying its facilities and the incredible natural thermal waters it offers. Find out here how to get there and other necessary information for your visit.

Day 6: Snowboarding or hiking?

One of the virtues of the Las Trancas Valley, where Nevados de Chillán is located, is that it has an extended snow season where the hills are covered with a great white blanket.

Given these natural conditions in the area and the large infrastructure, you can take snowboarding classes to learn everything you need about this sport. It is truly an art to handle the board!

Another alternative to do in the middle of 7 days traveling around Chile is to explore more of the valley through hiking trails that offer amazing panoramic views.

You will travel through lenga and coihue forests, and you will be able to enjoy mountain landscapes and crystal-clear rivers. Finally, a visit to the Las Trancas Valley lookout will give you an amazing view of the surroundings. This itinerary combines adventure, relaxation, and nature, offering a unique experience in one of the most beautiful destinations in Chile.

Remember to book your activities with  tourist services registered with Sernatur.

Day 7: The end of the journey and the ideal souvenir

After so many adventures, it is time to go back to Santiago and start on your journey back. Make the most of the last day to look for an incredible souvenir that can help you to remember the experience of visiting Chile.

For you or a loved one, Chilean wine is excellent, and it will certainly be a highly appreciated present. You will find award-winning varieties worldwide in shopping malls, vineyards, and wine bars.

A fine Carmenere wine, an almost extinct strain that was reborn in Chile, stands out for its deep, dark color, smoothness and versatility in pairing with red meats, pasta with rich sauces, or specialized dishes.
