How to get to Puyehue Hot Springs from Bariloche?

Puyehue Hot Springs are located about 3 hours from Bariloche and are one of the favorite getaways for those crossing from Argentina to southern Chile during the winter. Access is via the Cardenal Antonio Samoré Pass, one of the main border crossings between the two countries, which is open to all types of vehicles. From there, just follow Route 215-CH towards Puyehue.

One of the great advantages of this destination is its proximity: from the border crossing, the trip to the main entrance of the hot springs takes about 50 minutes.

The journey from Bariloche to Puyehue is also part of the experience: the route crosses snow-covered mountain landscapes and some of the most iconic scenery in northern Patagonia.

What to consider when crossing the Cardenal Samoré Pass in winter

During the winter season, it’s important to check the status of the pass before traveling, as weather conditions can change quickly due to snow and ice on the road.

Before you leave, consider:

  • Carrying snow chains, especially on snowy days.
  • Checking the border crossing’s hours and status.
  • Driving with caution in mountain areas.
  • Allowing for more travel time on days with bad weather.

The border complex is located at 1,305 meters above sea level and connects the province of Neuquén—minutes from Villa La Angostura and very close to Bariloche—with the Los Lagos Region, becoming one of the most scenic routes to discover the Chilean winter.
