The snow season in Chile is one of the most anticipated times of the year for those dreaming of white landscapes, imposing mountains, and unforgettable experiences in the Andes Mountains.

In 2026, winter will once again transform the country into a vast natural stage where ski centers, snowboarding, hot springs, and nature come together to create an unforgettable trip. If you’re looking for adventure and want to enjoy the southern winter, this is the ideal time to start planning.

When does the snow season start in Chile?

The start of the season depends directly on rainfall and low temperatures at high altitudes. The first ski centers usually open between late May and June. It generally extends until September and even October in some southern areas.

As with every year, exact dates may vary depending on weather conditions, so it’s recommended to check for updated information.

Few capitals in the world allow you to enjoy snow at such a short distance. Less than two hours from Santiago, some of South America’s most important ski centers are concentrated.

Valle Nevado, La Parva, El Colorado, and Farellones make up a mountain corridor perfect for all levels. Here you can practice skiing and snowboarding, take lessons, and enjoy snow parks and breathtaking views.

Day tours are available from Santiago that include transportation to the ski centers, with prices starting from 40,000 Chilean pesos (around USD 40–45), depending on the service and the season.

Just 2 hours and 35 minutes from Santiago is Portillo, the oldest ski center in South America. With 35 runs, it is the ideal destination to experience adrenaline in a unique high-mountain setting.

There are day programs, week-long packages, or custom stays, depending on the type of experience you’re looking for. The center offers accommodations with privileged views of the Inca Lagoon, including a hotel, chalets, and a lodge, as well as restaurants—ideal for recharging your energy after a day in the snow.

It is an ideal destination for winter sports, with high-level infrastructure that integrates thermal pools and a varied gastronomic offer. The center has 20 runs, 13 lifts, and various accommodation alternatives, including hotels, apartments, and designated camping areas.

To get there, those traveling by plane arrive at Concepción’s Carriel Sur Airport, followed by a two-and-a-half-hour land journey. From Santiago, the drive takes between five and six hours.

In the heart of the Malalcahuello National Reserve, you’ll find the Corralco mountain resort. Skiing here is a unique experience: the slopes unfold on the foothills of the Lonquimay Volcano, surrounded by ancient monkey puzzle trees.

It is a destination designed for those seeking disconnection and contact with nature. The center offers areas for skiing and snowboarding, freeride and freestyle zones, as well as family activities like snowshoeing.

To get there, you must fly to Temuco Airport in the La Araucanía Region, and from there continue the journey by land to the Malalcahuello National Reserve, where the resort is located.

Los Lagos Region: The magic of the Osorno Volcano

The Osorno Volcano Ski Center is a must-see during the snow season in Chile. Located on the slopes of the Osorno Volcano, in the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, it allows you to ski with privileged views of Llanquihue Lake.

It is one of the most popular ski centers in southern Chile and stands out for its unique natural environment. Every descent is an incomparable experience! You can practice skiing and snowboarding, enjoy areas to play in the snow, go sledding, and ride the panoramic lifts.

It is about 60 kilometers from Puerto Varas and 1 hour and 30 minutes from Puerto Montt. Access is via Route 225, bordering Llanquihue Lake to the Ensenada sector, then ascending toward the volcano on a paved road.
