San Pedro de Atacama is accessible by land and air. Some backpackers choose to fly to Calama, the nearest town, and then continue on their way to the city. The trip from Calama takes about one hour and twenty minutes and offers spectacular views of the desert.

The town has various accommodation options for backpackers, from hostels with shared rooms and private dormitories to campsites if you prefer to be in contact with nature.

Here, you can explore different tourist attractions:

  • Valle de la Luna: A lunar landscape with unique rock formations and dunes, ideal for sunset hikes.
  • Géiseres del Tatio: One of the largest concentrations of geysers in the world. It is best to visit at sunrise when the fumaroles can be seen at their maximum expression.
  • Lagunas Altiplánicas: Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons, located more than 4,000 meters above sea level, are impressive for their turquoise waters and surrounding volcanoes.
  • Salar de Atacama: This vast salt flat is home to flamingos and other wildlife. It is ideal for hiking and enjoying landscape photography.

Some practical tips you should follow are:

  • Hydration: The desert is arid, and temperatures can fluctuate drastically between day and night. Always carry water and stay hydrated.
  • Sun protection: Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat, as the sun’s radiation is intense in the desert.
  • Appropriate clothing: Dress in layers. Mornings and evenings can be cold, while it can be very hot during the day.
  • Altitude adaptation: Some excursions take you to high altitudes, so it is advisable to take some time to acclimatize if this is your first time there.
