The Andes Mountains and native forests bring to life unique landscapes just a few kilometers from the Chilean capital. They are ideal for a day trip or a short getaway.

While Santiago has large parks and green areas within its urban area, such as San Cristóbal Hill, O’Higgins Park, or Quinta Normal Park, it is also an excellent starting point for exploring some of the most attractive environments in central Chile.

In Cajón del Maipo you will find mountains, rivers, hot springs, and small mountain towns that make this destination one of the best alternatives for enjoying nature near Santiago.

Here you can visit El Yeso Reservoir, a large water reservoir surrounded by peaks that remain snow-capped for much of the year. Its turquoise waters form one of the most photographed landscapes in central Chile. Other famous areas include El Morado, Baños Morales, and the Valle de Colina Hot Springs.

You can also enjoy activities like trekking, cycling, visiting hot springs, and savoring local cuisine in its mountain towns.

If you want to experience the Andes Mountains without going too far from the urban area, the Yerba Loca Nature Sanctuary is an excellent alternative. Here you can walk trails surrounded by mountains, ravines, and native vegetation, with privileged views of El Plomo Hill, one of the most iconic peaks in the Metropolitan Region.

The sanctuary is also known for housing the La Paloma Glacier. However, reaching it requires a long hike, so it is important to plan your visit in advance.

In Río Clarillo National Park, you can discover one of the most representative ecosystems of central Chile: the sclerophyllous forest. Its trails, located around the Clarillo River, cross landscapes where native species like peumos, litres, and quillayes grow. During the tour, you will also have the chance to spot birds and other animals native to this environment.

Although it requires a longer trip than the other destinations on the list, at the Río de Los Cipreses National Reserve, you can enjoy mountain landscapes, rivers, and valleys in an environment with little human intervention.

Here you will have the opportunity to observe species such as guanacos, foxes, and condors, as well as walk through ancient mountain cypress forests, the native species that gives this protected area its name. It is an ideal destination if you want to combine hiking with wildlife watching.

Located in the Valparaíso Region, in La Campana National Park, you can visit one of the most characteristic protected areas in central Chile. The Chilean palm grows here, an endemic species that can live for hundreds of years and is part of one of the country’s most important ecosystems.

Its trails will allow you to explore different natural environments and get views of the Andes Mountains and even the Pacific Ocean on clear days. Additionally, you can discover the history of this place, visited by Charles Darwin during his trip through Chile in 1834.

6. Aguas de Ramón Natural Park

Here you will find different routes depending on your experience level, from short walks to more demanding treks, such as the trail to Salto de Apoquindo, a waterfall surrounded by Andean foothills.

Due to its proximity and easy access, it is an ideal alternative for those with limited time, traveling without a car, or wanting to combine a city visit with an outdoor experience.
