Archaeological studies indicate that this settlement <strong>began to be inhabited around 400 BC<\/strong>. It is estimated that it was inhabited by the Atacame\u00f1o people (or Lickanantay), who developed agriculture, raised llamas and alpacas, and established exchange networks with other peoples. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This place demonstrates the enormous capacity for adaptation and resilience of human societies, which managed to subsist in one of the planet&#8217;s most extreme environments.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main core of the village was composed of approximately <strong>30 circular enclosures interconnected by corridors, patios, and common spaces<\/strong>. The village <strong>remained hidden under the sand until 1956<\/strong>, when Jesuit priest and archaeologist <a href=\"https:\/\/museodelosmuseos.com\/2025\/02\/25\/del-esplendor-al-olvido\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/museodelosmuseos.com\/2025\/02\/25\/del-esplendor-al-olvido\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gustavo Le Paige<\/a> identified structures protruding from the dunes. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the conservation of the site remains a challenge. It is located <strong>just 10 kilometers southwest of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/itineraries\/be-amazed-by-every-single-one-of-san-pedro-de-atacamas-places\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>San Pedro de Atacama<\/strong><\/a>, on the road to Valle de la Luna. The journey takes between 15 and 20 minutes by vehicle.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the main ways to get there:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Private car or taxi:<\/strong> From San Pedro de Atacama, take <strong>Route 23<\/strong> towards <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/blog\/visiting-moon-valley\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/blog\/que-debes-saber-valle-luna-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Valle de la Luna<\/a>. Shortly before reaching the latter, you will find a signposted detour to the Coyo sector and Tulor Village.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bicycle:<\/strong> This is one of the favorite options among travelers. The route is mostly flat and crosses the Atacama oasis and dune areas. The journey takes between 30 and 45 minutes. It is recommended to do it early to avoid the high desert temperatures.   <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Organized tour:<\/strong> Many local agencies include Tulor Village within cultural circuits along with other nearby attractions, such as Pukar\u00e1 de Quitor and Valle de la Luna. For a safe and responsible experience, it is recommended to <a href=\"https:\/\/serviciosturisticos.sernatur.cl\/resultado.php?page=1&amp;nombre=&amp;tipo_servicio=3&amp;comuna_nombre=San+Pedro+De+Atacama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hire tourist services registered with Sernatur.<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it mandatory to take a tour to visit Tulor Village?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. Visiting Tulor Village <strong>can be done independently, and hiring a tour is not mandatory<\/strong>. The site is managed by the local community and features a small interpretive museum, reconstructions of ancestral dwellings, and walkways that allow observation of the archaeological remains.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, visiting with a local guide can enrich the experience, as it allows for a better understanding of the history, worldview, and traditions of the Atacame\u00f1o communities.<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/serviciosturisticos.sernatur.cl\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/serviciosturisticos.sernatur.cl\/\">Check out the tourist services registered with Sernatur here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Useful Information for Your Visit<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the intense solar radiation of the Atacama Desert, it is recommended to visit Tulor Village <strong>during the morning <\/strong>and bring <strong>plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Visit duration:<\/strong> between 45 minutes and 1 hour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Entrance fee:<\/strong> CLP $5,000 for foreign visitors (about USD $5).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do not touch or remove archaeological remains<\/strong>.
