The starting point for the expedition is usually the town of Diego de Almagro, about 150 kilometers north of Copiap\u00f3, the capital of the Atacama Region.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Because this salt flat remains virtually untouched, it\u2019s recommended to travel with <strong>certified guides<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/serviciosturisticos.sernatur.cl\/nueva_busqueda.php?page=1&amp;tipo_servicio=13&amp;clase_servicio=335&amp;region=3&amp;comuna=0&amp;nombre=\"><strong>tourism services registered with Sernatur<\/strong><\/a>, who have the necessary knowledge and logistics. <\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>best time to visit<\/strong> is between <strong>September and March<\/strong>, when the weather is more stable and the lagoons show their most intense colors.<\/p>\n\n<p>For a safe visit, keep the following in mind:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Desde Santiago<\/strong> el viaje inicia con un vuelo directo hasta el Aer\u00f3dromo Desierto de Atacama, en Copiap\u00f3 (1 hora y 30 minutos aproximadamente).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most operators offer <strong>3- to 4-day expeditions<\/strong> that connect the salt flat with other highlights of the Puna de Atacama.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tour prices start at CLP $450,000 (approximately USD 470), depending on the operator and duration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using <strong>4&#215;4 vehicles<\/strong> equipped for high-altitude conditions and mining gravel roads is strictly necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What wildlife can you see at Salar de Gorbea?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Despite the salinity and extreme altitude, this ecosystem is home to <strong>surprising biodiversity<\/strong>. Notable species include vicu\u00f1as, Baird\u2019s sandpiper, and occasionally flamingos. This wildlife depends on very specific conditions to survive, so it\u2019s essential to <strong>keep your distance, avoid interfering with their habitat, and keep noise to a minimum<\/strong> during your visit.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tips to avoid altitude sickness<\/h2>\n\n<p>At around 3,950 meters above sea level, the body experiences what\u2019s commonly known as <strong>&#8220;puna&#8221;<\/strong>. Altitude sickness is the body\u2019s natural response to lower oxygen availability.  <\/p>\n\n<p>That\u2019s why proper preparation is key to enjoying the unique landscapes of <strong>Salar de Gorbea<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Avoid going straight up to the salt flat<\/strong>. Ideally, spend at least one or two nights at mid-altitude locations like El Salvador, or make gradual stops at intermediate camps.
