1. Alerce Costero National Park: the oldest tree in the world <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the Los R\u00edos Region, Alerce Costero National Park<\/strong> protects the \u201cGran Abuelo<\/strong>,\u201d a millennia-old alerce considered the oldest tree on the planet<\/strong>, with more than five thousand years<\/strong> of life. This giant reaches nearly 4 meters in diameter and 60 meters in height\u2014about the same as a 20-story building! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s said the pyramids of Egypt, especially those at Giza, were built more than 4,500 years ago. So this specimen would be even older. Simply incredible! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To visit it, hike the Los Alerces Trail<\/strong><\/a>, a moderate route with an approximate duration of 1.5 hours<\/strong>. You\u2019ll head into a temperate rainforest of mosses, giant ferns<\/strong>, and monumental trunks, home to species such as the pud\u00fa, g\u00fci\u00f1a, puma, and Magellanic woodpecker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Laguna San Rafael National Park: one of the world\u2019s largest water reserves<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Right on the Carretera Austral, Laguna San Rafael National Park<\/strong> protects the Northern Patagonian Ice Field<\/strong>, the third-largest ice reserve on the planet<\/strong>, after Antarctica and Greenland. Its star attraction is the San Rafael Glacier<\/strong>, whose blue ice walls tower over a lagoon packed with icebergs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sailing to its ice front lets you see calving events, explore fjords, and take in one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Chile\u2019s national parks. The best time to visit is between November and April<\/strong>, when the weather in Patagonia is more stable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Pan de Az\u00facar National Park: desert and sea in a single postcard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Few places in the world bring together desert, the Pacific Ocean, and star-filled skies like Pan de Az\u00facar National Park<\/strong>, between the Antofagasta and Atacama regions<\/strong>. This park is known as one of the areas with the best astronomical visibility in northern Chile<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By day, it amazes with dunes, cliffs, and vast cactus forests: there are more than 27 cactus species<\/strong>, many of them endemic to the area, giving this coastal desert a truly unique character. The wildlife is also remarkable, with colonies of Humboldt penguins and marine otters<\/strong>. The park offers hiking trails with lookouts over the Pacific, as well as boat trips to Pan de Az\u00facar Island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This park protects one of the most extraordinary territories on Earth. The Juan Fern\u00e1ndez Archipelago<\/a> has the highest level of endemism per square kilometer on the planet<\/strong>, meaning much of its flora and fauna exists nowhere else. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volcanic islands and evergreen forests shape a landscape that captivates visitors. Its sea stands out for its biodiversity and clarity, ideal for diving, kayaking, and boat trips. Access is via charter flights from Santiago to Robinson Crusoe Island<\/strong>, followed by a boat ride to the village of San Juan Bautista. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Bosque Fray Jorge National Park: an oasis in the desert<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a refuge for whales, penguins, and large seabirds such as the albatross<\/strong>.
