Here, the Copiapoa cactus, popularly known as &#8220;coquimbano,&#8221; thrives, <strong>along with other variants that can reach up to seven meters in height. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cachiuyo shrub and trees like the tamarugo and algarrobo are examples of vegetation in this area, while flowers such as celestina, velvet flowers, and field lilies bloom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we can&#8217;t forget the <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/blog\/desert-bloom-north-of-chile-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blooming desert<\/a>, an impressive spectacle that occurs <strong>after scarce winter rains,<\/strong> bringing to life small seeds of guanaco hooves, malvillas, a\u00f1a\u00f1ucas, or coronillas de Fraile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/bkt-chile-travel\/2024\/01\/a49516c4-desierto-florido.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44762\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo: Sernatur Audiovisual Bank.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The surprising fauna in the Atacama Desert<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>Atacama Desert<\/strong>, animals live near wetlands, salt flats, and lagoons, which are the scarce water sources in the area. South American camelids, including llamas, alpacas, guanacos, and vicu\u00f1as, <strong>are examples of animals adapted to high altitudes and extreme conditions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where to see llamas in Chile<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Llamas are the most well-known camelids in Chile, <strong>with individuals reaching up to 1.90 meters in height.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/bkt-chile-travel\/2024\/01\/1205dbde-cosmovision_aymara_11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44758\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo: Sernatur Audiovisual Bank.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>They are mainly found in the high-altitude regions of Tarapac\u00e1 and Antofagasta. A perfect spot to see llamas is the <strong>Salar de Tara<\/strong>, located about 150 kilometers east of San Pedro de Atacama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Approach llamas responsibly, as they may spit or kick if they feel threatened. <a href=\"https:\/\/serviciosturisticos.sernatur.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It&#8217;s advisable to hire a guide registered with Sernatur.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where to see flamingos in Chile<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With their distinctive pink color and long legs and necks, <strong>flamingos attract travelers worldwide and are one of the most photographed species in our country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find these marvelous birds in the Salar de Pujsa, Miscanti and Mi\u00f1iques lagoons, and the Salar de Atacama, which, along with the aforementioned Salar de Tara, are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/bkt-chile-travel\/2024\/01\/b7527e09-salar_ascotan_09.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44770\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo: Sernatur Audiovisual Bank.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other animals inhabiting the Atacama Desert include desert foxes, vizcachas, long-tailed snakes, red-headed vultures, tench fish, and harriers, among many other species <strong>best discovered on your own.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Unmissable salt flats<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The climatic conditions in the Atacama Desert give life to salt flats, <\/strong>places of extraordinary biodiversity.
