There are more than 500 different species that make up <strong>Chile&#8217;s bird life,<\/strong> to the delight of these birdwatchers and nature fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdschile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>BirdsChile<\/strong><\/a> group<strong>,<\/strong> which has been involved in this world for over 10 years, told us about this discipline and gave us some advice for those who are new to the hobby: <em>\u201cFor those who are just starting out, we recommend that they get a good pair of binoculars and some good books and field guides.\u00a0 That&#8217;s really enough, the rest is just passion and patience\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/chile-travel-static-content\/2020\/07\/observadores_ok-1024x565.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58493\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within this context it can be understood that ornithological <em>and<\/em> <strong><em>birdwatching <\/em><\/strong>tourism have developed with special emphasis on conservation and respect for natural environments, rescuing and actively collaborating with conservation and protection projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this can also begin in your own backyard, which will later become your great passion, says <strong>BirdsChile<\/strong>: <em>&#8220;Birds can be seen from your own backyard or by walking through the parks and streets of your city.&nbsp; Take advantage of connecting with the entire natural environment and appreciate the interactions of birds, taking notes on their behavior, information on their presence, songs and of course the characteristics of their plumage and appearance.&nbsp; Once you are hooked you can&#8217;t go back!\u201d <\/em>they claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important issue is the 33 species of <strong>birds in Chile <\/strong>that are under the threat of extinction, so this careful and conservationist approach to viewing sites must be rigorously observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/chile-travel-static-content\/2020\/07\/Pinguino-de-Humboldt_ok-1024x563.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58499\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From North to South: Where to watch Chile\u2019s most beautiful birds<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u201c<em>Arica and the Altiplano<\/em><\/strong><em>, part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/areas\/santiago-valparaiso-and-wine-valleys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>central zone<\/strong><\/a> and in the south in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/areas\/forests-lakes-and-volcanoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Los Lagos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/destinations\/punta-arenas-and-strait-of-magellan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Magallanes<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/destinations\/tierra-del-fuego\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tierra del Fuego<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 This is the classic circuit that allows you to see all the birds you are looking for in continental Chile,\u201d <\/em><strong>BirdsChile<\/strong> says, although they stress the relevance of looking for <em>\u201cecosystems, more than territories\u201d,<\/em> during the observation of Chile\u2019s birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/areas\/atacama-desert-and-altiplano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">north<\/a>, the proximity to border ecosystems, in addition to the geographical position within the species\u2019 migratory route from the northern hemisphere, makes the area of <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/destinations\/arica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Arica<\/strong><\/a> and the <strong>Altiplano<\/strong> a mandatory destination if the goal is birdwatching or photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And one of the must places that you cannot miss is the wetland at the mouth of the <strong>Lluta River,<\/strong> a more than 30 hectares protected area on the seashore, but which naturally extends far beyond: <em>\u201cThe Lluta River wetland is an incredible place to watch birds because it is also an environment where it is generally possible to observe species that are difficult to find in other regions of our country\u201d, <\/em>we are told by the birdwatching group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/chile-travel-static-content\/2020\/07\/rio-lluta_ok-1024x474.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58505\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This impressive ecosystem is located only 10 kilometers from the city of Arica and has been declared a \u201cnature sanctuary\u201d, in addition to being part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This wetland is a resting and nesting place for American migratory birds from the northern hemisphere, which arrive at the Chilean coast from October through the end of December and begin their journey back to North America in March.&nbsp; The site is normally home to thousands of birds, among which more than 180 different species have been recorded, including both resident and migratory birds, representing nearly a third of Chile\u2019s avifauna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/chile-travel-static-content\/2020\/07\/Gaviot\u00edn-Monja_ok-1024x611.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58511\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the species that can be seen here is the <strong>Eurasian whimbrel<\/strong> (Numenius phaeopus), which migrates from the northern hemisphere to all of Chile, the <strong>neotropic cormorant<\/strong> (Phalacrocorax brasilianus), <strong>black-crowned night heron<\/strong> (Nycticorax nycticorax), <strong>great egret<\/strong> (Ardea alba), <strong>little blue heron (<\/strong>Egretta caerulea), <strong>cinnamon teal<\/strong> (Anas cyanoptera),<strong> Peruvian booby<\/strong> (Sula variegata), <strong>cattle egret<\/strong> (Bubulcus ibis), <strong>Peruvian thick-knee<\/strong> (Burhinus superciliaris), <strong>white-backed stilt<\/strong> (Himantopus melanurus), <strong>Franklin&#8217;s Gull<\/strong> (Leucophaeus pipixcan), <strong>black skimmer<\/strong> (Rynchops niger), <strong>Elegant Tern <\/strong>(Thalasseus elegans),<strong> Baird&#8217;s sandpiper<\/strong> (Calidris bairdii),<strong> sanderling<\/strong> (Calidris alba) and <strong>Grey-headed gull<\/strong> (Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In higher plains, such as Putre (3,500 meters above sea level), the protagonists are birds such as the <strong>Andean flicker <\/strong>(Colaptes rupicola), the <strong>puna tinamou <\/strong>(Tinamotis pentlandii), the<strong> giant coot<\/strong> (Fulica gigantea) or the <strong>puna snipe<\/strong> (Gallinago andina).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when you get to salt flats like <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/attractions\/salar-de-surire-natural-monument\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Surire<\/a>, the feathers of Chile\u2019s birds turn pink: here you can see the three flamingo species that inhabit the country: the <strong>Chilean flamingo <\/strong>(Phoenicopterus chilensis), the <strong>Andean flamingo<\/strong> (Phoenicoparrus andinus) and <strong>James&#8217; flamingo<\/strong> (Phoenicoparrus jamesi).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/chile-travel-static-content\/2020\/07\/flamencos_ok-1024x501.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58517\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Central and Southern Zones<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the central and <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/areas\/forests-lakes-and-volcanoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">southern<\/a> zones of Chile you can find wonderful ecosystems for birdwatching.\u00a0 Our friends at <strong>BirdsChile<\/strong> tell us: <em>\u201cThe surroundings of Santiago are incredible for birdwatching.\u00a0 We have the Andes Mountains with the remnants of sclerophyllous forests and endemic species of those ecosystems and the heights where it is possible to find a great variety of charismatic and unique birds like the rufous-chested plover or the Andean Parakeet\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most special recommendations of the Chilean central zone are two wetlands and a natural park: the <strong>C\u00e1huil wetland<\/strong>; the <strong>Batuco wetland<\/strong>, and the <strong>San Carlos de Apoquindo Natural Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The C\u00e1huil wetland is 200 kilometers south of <a href=\"https:\/\/chile.travel\/en\/where-to-go\/central-area-santiago-and-valparaiso\/santiago\">Santiago<\/a> and is located at the mouth of the Nilahue River, near the famous Salinas de C\u00e1huil.&nbsp; A beautiful and peaceful environment, properly equipped with viewpoints and walkways, home to some 60 species of Chilean birds, both migratory and resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the latter are the <strong>coscoroba swan<\/strong> (Coscoroba coscoroba) and the <strong>black-necked<\/strong> <strong>swan<\/strong> (Cygnus melancoryphus), both endangered species; the <strong>cinnamon teal<\/strong> (Spatula cyanoptera), the <strong>black skimmer<\/strong> (Rynchops niger), the<strong> great egret<\/strong> (Ardea alba), the <strong>Cocoi heron<\/strong> (Ardea cocoi) and the <strong>red-fronted coot <\/strong>(Fulica rufifrons), among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/chile-travel-static-content\/2020\/07\/cisne-cuello-negro_ok-1024x548.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58523\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another wetland, even closer to Santiago, is <strong>Batuco,<\/strong> where there are about 70 species of birds, both resident and migratory, and where shorebirds can also be seen, being observable almost 20% of Chile&#8217;s birds here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among them, the <strong>Andean goose<\/strong> (Oressochen melanopterus), with flocks of up to 500 specimens, and the <strong>black-headed duck<\/strong> (Heteronetta atricapilla), concentrated in the area the largest world population of the species.&nbsp; You can also see the <strong>red shoveler<\/strong> (Spatula platalea), the <strong>yellow-billed pintail<\/strong> (Anas georgica) and the <strong>red-fronted coot<\/strong> (Fulica rufifrons), among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/chile-travel-static-content\/2020\/07\/tagua-frente-roja_ok-1024x498.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58529\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the <strong>San Carlos de Apoquindo<\/strong> natural park, near Santiago towards the mountain range, invites you to choose different trekking options where you can watch a great variety of birds from the central mountain and pre-Andean area of Chile.&nbsp; Some of the birds that you can see in this fantastic enclave of nature are the <strong>common diuca finch <\/strong>(Diuca diuca), the<strong> Chilean mockingbird<\/strong> (Mimus thenca), and the <strong>Chilean flicker <\/strong>(Colaptes pitius).&nbsp; Further in the heights we find the <strong>crag chilia<\/strong> -an endemic bird-, some <strong>owls<\/strong> or <strong>birds of prey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course, the enormous <strong>condor <\/strong>(Vultur gryphus), symbol of Chile, which inhabits a large area of the Andes, but that is likely to be seen in central Chile.&nbsp; The previously mentioned park and the areas of Embalse del Yeso in Caj\u00f3n del Maipo are great places to see them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>condor<\/strong> is one of the planet\u2019s largest flying birds, reaching up to 142 centimeters in height and over 3 meters in wingspan.&nbsp; The spectacle of watching a condor glide over the peaks of the Andes is impressive and breathtaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/chile-travel-static-content\/2020\/07\/CONDOR_OK-1024x464.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58535\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, in <strong>southern Chile<\/strong> the options are much wider, so it will require a separate dedicated article!&nbsp; However, we can highlight the wetlands of the Maull\u00edn River, Caul\u00edn in Chilo\u00e9 or the lagoons and wetlands of Magallanes and Tierra del Fuego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our friends from <strong>Birds Chile<\/strong> provide birdwatching details of the area, since there are many birds in danger of extinction and they are protected sites: \u201c<em>The most important precaution in these places is to follow the rules where they are in place and always move as cautiously as possible where rules don\u2019t exist, trying not to get too close to areas where birds rest and feed, hopefully using telescopes to watch them from a prudent distance to avoid upsetting their natural cycle.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/chile-travel-static-content\/2020\/07\/CARPINTERO-MACHO_ok-1024x458.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58541\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the birds that can be seen in rivers is the famous <strong>torrent duck<\/strong> (merganetta armata), symbol of BirdsChile, that can be seen in southern and all of Chile.&nbsp; They nest in pairs on the banks of rivers and their way of facing the torrents is quite striking.&nbsp; It is a beautiful bird, with very distinctive colors, and is often seen resting on rocks throughout its habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we&#8217;re not finished!&nbsp;
