El Colorado-Farellones: Skiing Just 32km from Santiago

Imagine yourself gliding through over 300,000 hectares of skiable ground in Chile's largest winter sports area. Though Farellones used to be separate from the larger El Colorado resort, the two merged years ago. Today, they offer a total of over 77 pistes and 20 lifts and are home to the continent's most modern snow park and the country's only lighted piste.

Farellones came to fame in the 1930s when the first wooden skis arrived from Switzerland and Norway, which makes it the founding father of winter sports in Chile. The first chairlift was built in the 1950s, the fondly remembered "Gran Bajada" (the Big Drop) that used to allow the bold and the brave to leap over the roof of the Hotel Posada. El Colorado was inaugurated in 1948 and quickly became a skiing tradition for novices and experts alike.

The season runs from mid-June to mid-October, but it's always best to check the weather conditions as the length of the season depends largely on rainfall. There is also a plethora of mountain activities to be enjoyed during the summer months such as mountain biking, canopying, trekking, rock and wall climbing, mountain boarding, outdoor horseback riding and paintball.

El Colorado has comfortable hotels, mountain refuges and apartments, and Farellones offers visitors the option of staying in a charming hotel or its rustic cabins. Local dining options range from simple eateries to sophisticated restaurants staffed by renowned chefs.
