Sunset in Algarrobo
Situated just 110 km west of Santiago in the northernmost part of the coastal tour circuit, Algarrobo is one of the main resort towns on Chile's central coast and home to some of its most beautiful scenery. Come enjoy its beaches and experience its unique blend of colonial architecture and sophisticated modern high rises.
Algarrobo has a unique history. Though it was a port of call for pirate corsairs during the 16th century, the town was not built up until the mid-1800s. Vestiges of this era include La Candelaria Chapel, which was built in 1837, and the period buildings near Las Cadenas Beach.
Those who visit the town will be treated to some of the best beaches on the coast. If you travel north, you will come to
El Canelo and
Canelillo, small stretches of sand set against hillsides covered in pine forests, as well as the more urban San Pedro, Club de Yates, Pejerrey, Las Cadenas, Internacional and Mirasol Beaches, all of which are famous for their sunsets. South America's largest swimming pool is located on the waterfront in a prominent hotel complex.
The nearby fisherman's wharf is home to scores of restaurants that serve fresh local seafood, and
Isla Pájaro Niño Nature Sanctuary, which is just across from the yacht club, teems with birdlife. Not all is sand and sea, however. Algarrobo is also home to ancient fossil remains and the Los Patitos, Yugo and Tunquén ecosystems, which welcome migratory birds each summer.
