Hornopirén, Gateway to the Carretera Austral

The adventure begins at La Arena Fishing Cove, where you will take the ferry across Reloncaví Sound. Stunning landscapes greet you on your voyage to Puelche Fishing Cove and along the highway to Hornopirén.

Be sure to treat yourself to the 45 min boat ride to Llancahué island, where you will find outdoor thermal pools with views of the Pacific.

Next, head to Hornopirén and Hornopirén National Park. Though this is one of the region's lesser-known parks, it well worth a visit, offering amazing landscapes, alerce forests, glaciers, the Yates and Hornopirén Volcanoes and the Rio Negro River Basin. The quiet beaches of Lake Pinto Concha offer good camping spots, which you can use free of charge.

Enjoy the lake's hiking trails or climbing routes, kayak its waters and keep an eye out for native fauna such as pumas, pudús and the fabulous huemul.

Your next stop is the small town of Futaleufú. Its rushing waters have catapulted it to fame and its river rapids have made it a world-class destination for rafting aficionados. Here you will find rapids from Class III (for novices) to Class V (for experts) as well as opportunities to enjoy hiking and canyoning routes and water sports such as fly fishing.

Getting There

By Bus Buses depart Puerto Montt daily for Hornopirén. Buses to Futaleufú depart only on weekdays.

By Car From Puerto Montt, take Route 7 to the Carretera Austral. At La Arena Fishing Cove, hope on the ferry that crosses Reloncaví Sound to Puelche Fishing Cove and then continue on the Carretera Austral to Hornopirén.
