The Surire Salt Flat National Monument sits 4,245 meters above sea level and forms part of Lauca National Park, a Biosphere Reserve. Its lagoons and wetlands are home to the ñandú, the bird for which the salt flats are named (it is called "suri" in Aymara), as well as Chilean, Andean and James's flamingoes.
The temperature here ranges from 5ºC during the day and -15ºC at night. CONAF park rangers can give you tips on where to go bird watching.
