Overland

Overland

Overland is a relatively new concept in Chile. The term refers to traveling in 4×4 vehicles or buses with roofed terraces that have been re-outfitted with new technology. The idea is to go beyond traditional tourism to become a traveler on an unforgettable expedition.

A number of agencies organize this kind of trip, which lasts one to two weeks. Most provide all-inclusive packages that cover transport, lodging, food, beverages, admission to national parks and equipment.

One of the most popular tours is of Atacama’s altiplano. Combining trekking and peaceful locales, it’s perfect for relaxed contemplation and photography. Programs include visits to archeological sites, volcanoes, salt flats, geysers, hot springs, old niter works, flamingo colonies, northern valleys (like Azapa) and cities like Arica and Iquique.

The other end of the country offers a much different alternative, with programs that travel through Chilean and Argentinean Patagonia. Tours depart from Puerto Montt and pass through the Carretera Austral, Queulat National Park, Puyuhuapi Hot Springs and Lake General Carrera. Groups then cross into Argentina to visit the legendary Perito Moreno Glacier and Mt. Fitz Roy before finishing up in Chile with a visit to Torres del Paine.
