The Maipo wine valley was chosen as the third best to visit in the world, according to the results of an open poll carried out by 10 Best Reader´s Choice from USA TODAY, defined on August 5th.
USA Today is one of the most important newspapers in national circulation of the United States, and its website has 10.7 million unique users a month. This is the first time that 10 Best Reader´s Choice chooses the best wine regions in the world, selected by a panel of experts related to the wine industry, as well as educators and critics of this same area. The Best Wine Region to Visit was achieved by the Alentejo region in Portugal, followed by the Okanagan Valley in British Colombia, Canada.
According to Kerry Woolard, one of the panel members, the Maipo Valley is one the wine producing regions of easiest access from its capital, Santiago. Its boutique French inspired wine cellars have given this valley the well deserved title of “Little Bordeaux”, without mentioning the marked style of its Cabernet Sauvignon wines, strongly associated to the ones found in the French wine regions.
The Maipo Valley also draws special attention to its great amount of wine tasting offers, intertwined with very attractive gastronomic and touristic attractions. Many of the wine cellars that are a part of this wine route hand over some of the best red wines of Chile, wines that express their origin with a clear character of its terroir.
Big or small, the wineries close to Santiago deserve to be visited, whether it is to taste their wines, breathe in some of Chile´s history or to simply explore part of one the most interesting capitals of South America.
